Gun Safety

Gun safety starts with you. The rules that follow are generally accepted gun safety rules. All of the rules work together. There may be other rules that belong on this list. If you know of any, please share.

1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded all the time.
 
2. Always keep the muzzle of the gun pointed in a safe direction.
 
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
 
4. Keep your gun unloaded and the action open until you are ready to shoot.
 
5. Never rely on a mechanical safety.
 
6. Know your target and what's beyond it.
 
7. Always use the correct ammunition for your firearm.
 
8. Always wear eye and ear protection.
 
9. Keep your firearm clean and maintain in accordance with factory instructions.
 
10. Never use guns when under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when tired.
 
11. Know what to do in the event of a misfire or hangfire.
 
12. Take a gun safety course from a certified instructor.
